The details

How the track counts work

Discounts apply when the tracks are delivered together as one job. Six tracks are £150, seven £170, eight £190, nine £210, and ten to twelve tracks £230. Ask for a rate on more than twelve. Please do not pay for several tracks and send them one a month; single tracks sent separately are £30 each.

What is included in every job

  • Listening and, if it helps, notes on the mix before processing starts (free on singles and EPs, £50 for a full album)
  • Equalisation, dynamics, stereo and loudness work using any combination of analogue and digital tools chosen for the track
  • Removal of up to nine clicks or pops per project; heavier restoration is quoted
  • Sequencing, spacing, fades and level matching on EPs and albums
  • One instrumental or PA version of each track, delivered with the master
  • A loud version and a streaming version where the genre benefits (discretionary)
  • Up to two revisions on a single, one on an album, on the mix as sent
  • Quality control of every file on headphones before delivery

What costs extra, and why

Resubmitting a changed mix after mastering is £15 per version, because it means emailing, listening again, checks and quality control, and the track may go through the analogue chain again in real time. Multiple bit-depth or sample-rate deliveries, extra alternate versions and audio restoration beyond a few clicks are quoted in advance. Nothing is added without telling you first.

Payment terms

Independent artists and small jobs are paid in advance by PayPal, which is what schedules the work and keeps the queue fair. Well-established labels can ask about 30-day invoice terms. No PayPal account? Most people have a friend or relative who does, and many clients pay that way.

Why it costs less than you expected

I have priced this way for sixteen years. The rates are roughly half what engineers with similar experience charge, and some people see £30 and assume the work must be cheap too. It is not. The room, the monitoring, the analogue rack and the experience are the same as studios charging £90 a track. The difference is that I own the equipment outright, keep the overheads low, and would rather be busy doing the work I love than expensive and quiet.

If the price makes you hesitate, send one track. Compare it with anything you have paid more for. That is how most of the labels and repeat clients on the credits page started.

A short, unscripted explanation of the pricing and a look at the room.

Before you press the button

Do you charge VAT?

No. There is no VAT or any other tax added for clients in any country. The price you see is the price you pay.

Can I pay for an album in instalments?

Albums are scheduled on full payment so they can be worked on as one piece. If cash flow is tight, talk to me; there is usually a sensible way through.

What happens after I pay?

You are returned to the contact page with a note confirming payment. Upload the files (WeTransfer to the studio email is easiest) with your notes, and the job goes into the next slot. I email to confirm receipt.

Is stem mastering more than stereo mastering?

Yes, £56 per track for up to fourteen stems, because it involves considerably more work. It is still lower than many studios charge for stereo mastering. What stem mastering is and when it helps.

Do you offer a free test master?

Not any more. After sixteen years of doing this as a sole income, my time goes to paying clients. A single track at £30 is the test; most people who try one come back with the rest of the release.

Not sure which option you need?

Email a link to the mix and a line about the release. I will tell you honestly what it needs, either stereo or stem mastering.
