Barry Gardner. Twenty-four years of listening.
Head engineer at one of London’s largest audio production companies, trained for three years by a former BBC studio manager, and since 2010 the sole mastering engineer at Safe&Sound Mastering. Here are some of my clients.
Public Service Broadcasting (UK top 10 album, mastered here), Denise Chaila – Go Bravely (RTÉ Choice Music Prize, Album of the Year 2020), Nick Powell (Composer: West End, Broadway, David Attenborough’s Our Story), Terence Collie (TecJazz) (Jazz pianist, MOBO Amplified award winner), Carpe Sonum Records (Die Welt ist Klang, 8-CD Pete Namlook tribute), Neil Athale (Film composer, international feature films), ESP Project (Producer Tony Lowe and colleagues), Acid Jazz Records, BMG Chrysalis (Label work), Ozric Tentacles, Omni Trio, Låpsley, The Beat, Dee C’rell (Artists across rock, drum and bass, pop, jazz and ska; I am comfortable with all genres).
From broadcast sessions to the mastering engineer chair

After audio engineering college and a diploma, I spent three years being trained by a former BBC studio manager, then joined the UK’s largest independent audio production company, where I became head of engineering. I was the technical point of contact for a seven-room music and broadcast studio build, and my daily work was recording and mixing sessions with professional musicians: multitrack and direct-to-stereo sessions, BBC Radio 1, 2 and 3 broadcast sessions, live event recording and outside broadcasts.
That is where the ears were trained: on Ronnie Wood, Craig David, Chick Corea, John Legend, Bat for Lashes, Metronomy, The Coral, Kate Nash, June Tabor and hundreds of others, balancing real performances for broadcast where there was no second take. Mastering came up in various projects and I found I had both the aptitude and the appetite for it.
In 2010 I set up Safe&Sound Mastering as a dedicated mastering studio: no mixing, no recording, one room built and treated for the job and kept unchanged so that every decision has the same reference. Being a mastering engineer has been my sole income since. I have made electronic music myself since 1991 and still do in the evenings, which keeps me honest about what producers are up against and equally comfortable with sub-heavy dance music, heavy rock and acoustic performance.
How I work
Efficiently, and by ear. The first impressions of a mix arrive in seconds; what takes experience is knowing what to do about them, when to proceed and when to ask for a change of the mix. I would rather tell you a kick drum is 4 dB too loud than master around it. Communication is short and specific.
As a mastering engineer I like show my work room and the equipment on this site because you should be able to see what you are paying for. Plenty of engineers do not. Equipment is an important ingredient, and you cannot fix what you cannot hear.
In their words
A selection from sixteen years. Names are real and the releases are on the credits list below.
I am extremely happy with the results. It sounds both smoother and fatter, exactly what I was after, without being over hyped. I had tried doing it myself but nothing beats a fresh pair of good ears in a good room with good equipment, and Barry has all of those.
Your golden ear and attention to detail really came through. Over months and eight CDs your patience, diligence and professionalism were unparalleled. “Good enough” is clearly not in your vocabulary.
When presented with an album of eclectic music that required balancing and bringing together, Barry delivered swiftly and with real finesse. His masters really breathed air into the music, with subtlety and great taste.
The tweaks you suggested made a big difference and your critique was spot on. The song really has punch and bounces along just how I envisaged. You nailed it.
Very impressed with your work. I will definitely be sending more mastering work your way.
Right from the beginning I was impressed by his professionalism, punctual communications and advice. The finished product really brought the music to life. We will definitely be using him for our next album.
Awesome work. We are very happy with the results. Once again you managed to exceed the speed of sound.
Barry not only knows his craft but clearly has a natural ability and talent for audio. He treated my project with due respect and produced exactly what was needed. A top drawer service that I highly recommend.
I’ve been playing it all week on a Funktion-One system, sounds really nice, thanks!
The songs really do sound great now after being through your capable hands. It has been a pleasure dealing with you and thanks for your care and attention throughout the process.
Thanks for an absolutely great and warm master! You brought this track up to a whole new level. I am fully satisfied.
Barry worked quickly and still managed to take the records to the next level. Brilliant work.
A friend in the music industry recommended Safe&Sound and I would do exactly the same. Very happy with the masters and also importantly the manner in which we were dealt with. Professional finish and a fast turnaround.
You have always made my sounds great, warmer and with a nice but not excessive touch of colour that makes them more interesting to listen to, not necessarily as loud as possible, so as to preserve their inner dynamics.
I looked all over the place for a mastering engineer for my album and did not find anyone to meet the standard I was looking for till now.
This is superb. Can you do this for my next album too? You’ve really brought the best out in every song.
Thanks to Barry our tracks are sounding great. I will be using his services from now on as the quality and communication is amazing.
The tracks are sounding great, perfectly rounded and polished. You have good ears, thanks for lending them to my music.
