What is mastering?
Audio
mastering is the final preparation of a body of works by a highly competent and meticulous engineer. This includes commitment
to a pre mastering medium such as CD-R (Red Book) or a DDP (Disc Description Protocol). The goal of audio mastering in a nutshell
is making your music sound better. Mastering is the stage where the music is listened to with a fresh pair of ears using
high resolution equipment by an experienced individual. It is at this point where tonal adjustments can be made to ensure
the music will translate well across as many playback systems as possible (radio broadcasts, in car, hi fi, club sound systems,
online). It is also the stage where the engineer will be listening carefully for edits, clicks, pops, low frequency bumps
(mic stand hits) and other extraneous noises. In addition competitive loudness is something that can be achieved with the
minimum of side effects if this is desired. Each piece of music will have differing qualities and the mastering should be
tailored as such. I will show your music in it's best possible light. I am currently offering unattended online low
cost mastering.
In recent years the exact definition
of "what is mastering" has changed a little. These days many budgets within the music industry have been reduced
and as such the record labels, producers and musicians have more restricted financial means to obtain such services. I have
found it very important to understand this new position and have tailored my rates to be afforded and yet uncompromising in
terms of result and quality of service offered. The online mastering model can be open to abuse by some unscrupulous individuals
and I offer a transparent website showing the equipment I use, the room in which it is used, my full engineering experience
and a free preview so you know what you are getting in advance of any payments. At SafeandSound you can be assured of high
quality but low cost mastering.
Mastering audio is not
mixing multitrack recordings. Mastering uses the final stereo interleaved mix file that has been produced by the artist or
mix engineer. This mix is processed with very high quality analogue and digital audio equipment to refine the sound and enhance
the end results. Mastering uses processing such as high end analogue equalization, dynamic range control such as compression,
stereo adjustment processing and limiting. The basis of mastering starts when an experienced engineer has a very accurate
environment and loudspeakers which are capable of resolving the scale, detail and any technical issues with the music. The
experience of the engineer and the taste of the client will all feed into the end results. A great master should be defect
free and sound as good as possible on a wide range of music reproduction systems.
SafeandSound offers a low cost mastering service to get your audio ready for release.Safeandsound mastering endeavours to go beyond other cd mastering studios in experience, audio quality
and attention to detail.
